good people, great art. TKDA finds out why they do it.

What inspired th
is idea?
We started back in 19
99 in order get friends goods for sale online ; this was back before paypal. So we built our own online store. It took off, and before we knew it, we had a lot more friends. We're excited now to be going on our 10th year.

Product to recommend?

Our first artist on board was our good friend Nikki McClure -- her new children's book with Cynthia Rylant is amazing. It's a bold, beautiful piece of art. We were honored to work with Nikki on making this happen. See it here.

Artist to recommend?
Sarah Utter continues to grow and change as an artist -- her most popular piece is the "Reading is Sexy" design
that's been featured on t-shirts, mugs and stickers. But she isn't just limited to slogans; she's an accomplished painter and we did a 2009 calendar with her that was a fun collection of imaginary birds.

Grooviest thing about your product?
We've never felt overly groovy; but we've always felt sincere. We try our best to tread lightly and be honest in what we do; all of our paper goods are made from recycled paper. We print at small, family-owned print shops. Most of our shirts are printed by just one person, in a garage. We've always kept things small scale, intentionally. We value the limited edition and the small runs over the mass produced.

What inspires you?
The amazing work our artists do. We work with almost a hundred different artists now, and they are constantly coming up with new, amazing stuff.

Plans for the future?
We're going to do our best to keep doing what we do. We've always grown organically, only taking on new artists as we've been able to handle. Getting to know everyone we work with and not just adding people willy-nilly helps us stay focused.

Job Hunting+Personal Branding Tips Part 1: ARTICULATION

by Keva Dine
President, TKDAinc.®
Recruiter for the creative industries

TKDA, Inc.'s Keva Dine Shares Career Tips w/ The Art Institutes

YouTube link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJ7PMUE4bqg

Job hunting is very personal and emotional, and, let's face it - stressful. Sometimes in the middle of all that emotional junk, we forget the basic parts about self promotion. I’m here to get you back into focus by sharing my insider knowledge about job hunting and self promotion tips. I speak about this a few times a year at design schools and it's always a great experience.

Over the next few months, I will post my fave job hunting and self promotion tips. Take note and pay heed - this is insider track stuff. This is stuff most recruiters will NOT take the time (...Or have the time. Honestly, were so slammed with job hunting candidates...) BUT I’m gonna squeeze these posts in whenever I can because I truly like to share.

ARTICULATION is KEY!

Knowing WHO you are
Knowing WHAT you want to do (or at least knowing what you like…)
is only the first step in mastering this first step in your job hunt+personal branding.

BUT that’s not enough.
The words in your resume and the words you use to describe yourself & your work have to match what your works looks like, what your personality exeudes, what you stand for, what you are known for, how others see you, where you want to work…
and on and on. Creative continuity in your portfolio and in your client projects is not enough. You have to have it with YOU. With your OWN PERSONAL BRAND.

I challenge you to do this exercise right now. Grab pen and paper and a printed copy of your resume & marketing materials (if you have any)

# 1.
Write down 10 words that describe you.
Write down 10 words that describe your work.

# 2.
Scan your resume and marketing materials and circle all the times you use the 20 words you just wrote down.

# 3.
How many circles do you have? 5? 3? 10? 15? Any less than 20 is too little.

NOW – here’s the work part:
Get those words into your resume PRONTO!
(need help with this? TKDAResume can help. Give us a shout)

Use those words in your emails.

Use those words when you are interviewing, when on the phone, when networking – everywhere.

Communicate those words when you talk about your self and your work.

Use these words when talking to everyone.

Practice all the time

If you can’t speak for yourself or your work, how will you speak (and sell) your client’s work? (And, yes, they will be thinking the same thing.)

Learn to articulate your thoughts and expressions and you will see results.

Get to work!

Scion presents: THIS MUST BE THE PLACE

Opening Night is Saturday, June 20th from 7-10pm

Scion presents: THIS MUST BE THE PLACE
Curated by Faesthetic Magazine

June 20 – July 11, 2009

This Must Be The Place, curated by Ohio based Faesthetic Magazine features eight American artists from the Faesthetic family who represent the diverse styles appearing in the magazine. This Must Be The Place is comprised of artwork centered around the theme of “Home,” and loosely limited to a 2 color palette, just like an issue of Faesthetic.

Featuring:
GLUEKIT, MAXWELL LOREN HOLYOKE-HIRSCH, DAMIEN CORRELL, JOEL SPEASMAKER, MATT CURRY, SKULL PHONE, DAN FUNDERBURGH, JEMMA HOSTETLER

Faesthetic began in 2001 as a photocopied zine and developed into a high-quality experimental arts magazine with international participation and readership.

The exhibit will display a collection of art and oddities by eight American artists inspired by the zine’s minimally toned aesthetic.

Featuring work from Gluekit, Maxwell Loren Holyoke-Hirsch, Damien Correll, Joel Speasmaker, Matt Curry, Skull Phone, Dan Funderburgh and Jemma Hostetler, the acclaimed multimedia artists and designers explore the theme of “home” with the loose limitation of a two-toned color palette.

Dollar ReDe$ign Project

The American Dollar has not truly been redesigned since about the 1930s. The Dollar ReDe$ign Project is your opportunity to theoretically ‘change’ that. Yes, technically there are many limitations and complications when it comes to bank note design, but if the Swiss can do it on a regular basis, why can’t we North Americans too. Besides our great ‘rival’, the Euro, looks so spanky in comparison it seems the only clear way to revive this global recession is to rebrand and redesign. Why not ? It seems to work for everyone else …

“But what’s in it for me?” Whichever submission we like the best will win a special limited edition word-art t-shirt designed by ‘international branding expert’ Richard Smith. Sound good? Then simply submit your redesign ideas here (based on the guidelines below). All entries will be posted. Closing date for submissions is July 4th, 2009.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Brief: simply redesign the US Dollar bill in any way you think appropriate and submit to us for review. We’ll then post the ones we like online.
Guidelines: clearly this is a hypothetical project so have some fun with it, don’t get bogged down in the rights and wrongs of currency design.
Technical Stuff: all submissions should be jpgs, 72dpi, 600px wide, please.
Where to Submit: email your ideas to DollarsNoSense@ThinkCreateBelieve.com
Rules and Regulations: there are none, other than we have the right to veto any work submitted. All copyright remains the property of those submitting their proposals, ie the ‘author’, and all proposals are submitted at the author’s own risk of being called up by the Feds or being wire tapped. All work must also belong to you, the author.
Closing Date: July 4th, 2009.
Legal: NONE of the work submitted can be used as legal tender. Anyone who tries will be sent to Coventry.

TKDANewsletter # 34 cont..

BUTCH & harold are the imaginary childhood dogs of sister team Michele and A
riane Gold. The dogs went everywhere with the girls and now have most recently become the namesake of their innovative home design collection of peel and stick artwork. Imagine - art that requires no framing, hooks or hammer! WE LOVE IT! Interview completed by Michele Gold

Why did you start BUTCH & harold?
It was born out of the frustration of living with bare walls and the expense of decorating them.

What's the coolest thing about what you do?
Coming up with great ideas and then finding out lots of other people think they're great as well!

Favorite thing you sell?
"stickr (frame)"s are my favorite because they really allow
you to personalize your space with your fav pics and change them out on a whim and create a gallery display on your wall.

If you weren't running BUTCH & harold what would you be doing? I'd be producing great Broadway musicals.... because if I can't make you smile in your home with great aesthetic I'll make you smile out of your home at the theater.

What is your Fave Musical?
Definitely "Ragtime" - one of those rare shows that nails it on all levels - great music, inspiring story, goose bump moments throughout!

What types of dogs are BUTCH & harold?
Butch is a miniature doberman pinscher and Harold is a cairn terrier.

Why is BUTCH caps and harold not?
I chose to create the logo of our company with BUTCH spelled in all caps and harold spelled
in lower case because I felt that through the style of the lettering the dogs' personalities are brought out - similar to their names themselves, BUTCH is more in-your-face and harold is a much more passive puppy! (BUTCH is pink and harold is orange...)

What pics do you have in your "frames"?
Since it is so easy to change it up, I
like to rotate my pictures with the endless pics of my kids that I'm taking and also sometimes throw in some old pictures of friends and family for nostalgia sake!

What famous people are fans of BUTCH & harold?
Snoopy is a fan. Paris Hilton’s dog Tinkerbell has dated both BUTCH and harold. Rumor has it that Bo Obama has a few of our pieces in his new crib at the White House.

Do you twitter?
Butch does but harold is pretty low key. We have a page on
Facebook though!

Any new projects in the works?
We have some new frames coming out in glam colors – pink and silver. They will be introduced this summer.

What CD is playing in the BUTCH & harold office?
A mix of the Beatles, classic 80's, Rilo Kiley and of course, showtunes!

Do BUTCH & harold wear outfits?
When posing for new packaging design BUTCH & harold love to role play - check out their conductor hats on the "stickr train (frame)" and wait till you see what they picked out for the soon-to-be-released "stickr glam (frame)". It's hot. Otherwise, they like to roll au natural.

Special TKDA offer: free "stickr (mini)" with each order, just type "TKDA" in the comments section of the check out process. Get sticking.

TKDAResume: Review of the day

“I’d recently hired a professional resume company (at a hefty fee) and was pleased with the results – AT FIRST. Then I got Keva’s e-blast about TKDA’s new resume-writing service. I wanted Keva’s opinion on my new resume because she’s always right-on with her advice.

I expected her to say I was ‘good to go.’

No such luck.

She said it didn’t effectively highlight my key strengths and wasn’t memorable enough to hook a recruiter.

So I signed up. I got my first draft less than a week later, and I was shocked by the difference.

My career experience had real impact, the language was convincing and the tone was creative, i.e. memorable. Plus, the writer had condensed the two pages to one, making it much easier to absorb at a glance.

highly recommend TKDAResume; I couldn’t be happier with their work.”
