AIGA San Diego "Y" Conference

With today’s economic fragility hitting just about everyone in some way, AIGA San Diego happily announces that we are offering reduced registration for next week’s 14th Annual “Y” Design Conference. Call it our economic stimulus package for designers. Everyone, members and non-members alike, can register for $375. Day passes are also available for $200.

This year’s “Y” Conference brings together nationally recognized leaders of the design community for inspiration and insights on the role of design today and how to weather the current economy. Featured speakers include Shel Perkins, a management consultant and author of Talent Is Not Enough: Business Secrets For Designers. Shel will be sharing his tips on creating the best business plan for all designers—from agencies to freelancers. Also among the conference’s 11 speakers is Yolanda Santosa, founder of Ferroconcrete, designers and strategists for the delectable premium frozen yogurt outlet Pinkberry. During times of dramatic change, creative thinkers have always seized the opportunity to design the future. Please consider attending as a media member, and help share the stories of today’s designers.

WHAT’S IN THE BOX

A collaborative piece by Lucas Geronimas, David Horvitz and The Black Hole Space

When:
March 26th, 3PM-7PM

Where:
Soo Visual Arts Center
2640 Lyndale Avenue
South
Minneapolis, MN
55408
612-871-2263

What's this all about?

The premise is simple: write your guess for what's inside the box on a paper ballot and insert it into the box. Each participant’s guess counts as a vote that will determine what is inside the box once the game ends. Through this process, the artists hope to use The Box Game to make a thought-experiment tangible. The Box Game is the first stage of Horvitz and Geronimas’s larger project What’s in the Box? The game is also the inaugural exhibition for the Black Hole Space, a traveling art venue conceived by Joshua Kit Clayton and curated by Terri C. Smith.

Answers received during The Box Game tour will be compiled and analyzed during the artists’ ten-day residency at the nascent Madiman Arts Interaction Center in New Haven, CT. The artists will have access to data analysis software and the advice of Yale faculty as they parlay the guesses from the game into the democratically desired object. In the end, Horvitz and Geronimas will exhibit their created “answer” as well as ephemera from the tour and residency. This performative art project highlights how constantly changing states only become 'real' once observed. What’s in the Box is also designed to question the ability of objective methods (the survey, analysis of data) to produce successful artworks. The Box Game asks, “What does democracy do for art, and science?”

My Take on the Way to Roll Campaign by: Taylor Knepper

For starters, I am elated to be a part of the Electra’s 2009 Way to Roll campaign. Being photographed by Art Brewer was totally amazing. Working with the prolific Nena Anderson was truly inspiring... and just being around Benno founder of Electra and seeing everything he has created just plain rocked. BUT what was extra special for me was having the opportunity to share my passion with the world about how much I dig my job. Searching for creative talent is one thing, getting someone their dream job is beyond exhilarating. I have been with Keva Dine & TKDA Inc. for 3+ years now and every day is a thrill. However, because of the nature of what we do I am always focused on my candidates and clients, and getting other people cool jobs. It's not often that I talk about my very own dream job. PLUS who I talk to and what I talk about with all my contacts is super 007 and we keep all this information confidential. Being featured in this Electra campaign was perfect - I was able to share my passions for my lifestyle and my love for my job. Perfect combo. Cuz that's what Electra is all about. I cannot thank Electra enough for making it all happen. Check it out in the April issue of Women's Health Magazine Ciao, Taylor
